Thunder Bay Tall Ships Festival

The 2nd Annual Thunder Bay Tall Ships® Festival attracted approximately 5,000 people, establishing this event as one of the most popular maritime attractions in the region! It is with tremendous appreciation that we thank our generous sponsors:

The Festival was co-hosted by the City of Alpena, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve.
This year’s festival featured replicas of the U.S. Brig Niagara, the wooden Schooners H.M.S. Bee and Madeline, and the marine research vessel Shenehon, as well as remarks from congressional and local leaders, and entertainment by Song of the Lakes, Beach Bards, and Ring of Steel.

The festivities commenced on Friday, August 16, 2002 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local dignitaries, including Alpena Mayor Phil Ludlow. Saturday’s highlights included welcoming remarks from U.S. Congressman Vernon Ehlers (MI-3rd). Various demonstrations and displays took place throughout the festival, including knot tying and an obstacle course sponsored by the local U.S. Coast Guard office.
