Become a Star and Support the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center - Only 58 Sea Stars Available!
Opened in October of 2006, the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is a state-of-the-art learning facility where visitors can learn about the science and stewardship necessary for managing and conserving the unique and fragile ecosystems comprising the Florida Keys and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
In celebration of its first year anniversary, on February 2, 2008, the Eco-Discovery Center officially opened its newest addition with the Mote Marine Laboratory’s Living Reef Exhibit. Featuring a dazzling 2,500 gallon reef tank of species indigenous to the Keys, this exhibit allows visitors to view a living ‘coral nursery’ where more than 22 species of coral are being actively propagated for replanting and restoring damaged reefs.
As part of the Center’s Celebration, a new public service announcement recorded at the Eco-Discovery Center by Alexandra and Philippe Cousteau, grandchildren of the famous ocean explorer and conservationist, Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, was released to instruct visitors to the Florida Keys and other marine environments about the stewardship practices important for conserving marine resources.
Nestled in famous Key West, the Eco-Discovery Center has greeted tens of thousands of visitors from all 50 states and over 20 foreign countries. Visitors journey through the rich diversity of underwater and terrestrial marine life and habitats unique to the Keys and learn about the conservation practices they can adopt to become stewards of the natural wonders they have come to visit and enjoy. The facility boasts over 6000 square-feet of audio/video interactive exhibits, featuring unique mangrove habitats, coral reef displays, a high definition theater, and a walk-through replica of the Aquarius Undersea Lab, the world’s only underwater laboratory, located off Key Largo, Florida.
