Koholā Campaign: Protecting Hawai‘i’s Humpback Whales
In 1992 the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary was designated to protect humpback whales and their habitat in Hawai‘i. At that time there were less than 4,000 whales migrating to Hawai‘i each winter. Now the Hawaiian Islands may be home to as many as 10,000 humpback whales which may be the largest seasonal population of humpback whales found anywhere in the world. Although their population is recovering, the whales need your help to be safe from continued threats like entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris and collisions with vessels.

Hawai‘i is the only state in the United States, where humpback whales mate, calve, and nurse their young. Therefore, the protection of whales in this area is essential. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is committed to the long-term protection of this endangered species. Your support is critical to ensuring that whale rescue and research programs continue and that public education and outreach programs increase.
With your generous contribution, we can ensure the protection of Hawai‘i’s humpback whales.
