Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument designated UNESCO World Heritage Site
August 2, 2010The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation congratulates Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument on being named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The designation was made official July 30, 2010, during the 34th World Heritage Convention in Brasilia, Brazil, when UNESCO delegates voted to inscribe the marine national monument as one of only 26 mixed (natural and cultural) World Heritage Sites globally -- and the only mixed natural and cultural seascape.
Breaking Ground at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center
July 9, 2010Imagine being able to see a national marine sanctuary up close and explore its many underwater treasures without even getting your feet wet. On Monday, July 12, officials from Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the City of Santa Cruz, California, will break ground on a Sanctuary Exploration Center where you’ll be able to do just that.
2010 Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund
June 29, 2010The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is currently planning to release a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund in 2010. In 2009, the RFP was released on July 1. This year, however, to be responsive to many applicants and partners, we are shifting the timing of the application process to the fall, and we are anticipating the RFP to be released in early September, after Labor Day. In addition, substantive changes to the format and criteria are anticipated.

Empire State Building Lit in Honor of U.N. World Oceans Day and National Marine Sanctuaries

NMSF Announces 2009 Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund Recipients
November 9, 2009The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation announced the award of seven grants ranging from $5,000 to more than $23,000 from the Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund. These projects are dedicated to increasing public awareness of issues related to our ocean, including marine debris, human interaction with marine mammals, pollution, and the connection between the ocean and human health. In a very competitive process, the seven grants totaling $105,000 were selected from a total of 55 applications requesting $1.2 million.

September 19, 2009The site for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz was officially dedicated to the people of Santa Cruz in a ceremony today near the Municipal Wharf. A sign announcing the project was unveiled and local businessman Charles Canfield kicked off a major fundraising campaign by presenting a check to help build educational exhibits for the planned state-of-the-art marine science education facility.
