Thunder Bay: An Evening with Robert Ballard

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s Tribute to Thunder Bay’ celebrated the rich cultural maritime heritage of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve. This event served as an opportunity to cultivate long-term relationships with businesses and individuals in the Alpena community.

Thunder Bay Tall Ships Festival

The 2nd Annual Thunder Bay Tall Ships® Festival attracted approximately 5,000 people, establishing this event as one of the most popular maritime attractions in the region! Schedule Announced for Only 2002 Tall Ships® Festival in Northeast Michigan

Alpena, MI - The Second Annual Thunder Bay Tall Ships Festival will feature the regional musical talents of the award-winning Song of the Lakes, as well as the Beach Bards, sword fighting demonstrations from Ring of Steel, and a visit from Alpena area Congressman Bart Stupak during its three-day run from August 16-18, 2002. The festival will feature three majestic sailing ships that played a unique role in the maritime adventures that characterized life on the Great Lakes during the 1800’s including the schooners Madeline, HMS Bee and the warship U.S. Brig Niagara.

Second Annual Thunder Bay Tall Ships® Festival Brings Local Maritime History to Life

Alpena, MI - A replica of the U.S. Brig Niagara, a warship that helped Americans defeat the British in one of the biggest naval battles in the War of 1812, will be among the vessels featured at the second annual Tall Ships® Festival, August 16-18. The event, hosted by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve (TBNMSUP) and the City of Alpena, celebrates the rich 200-year maritime history of the Great Lakes.

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2002

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2002 brought together a wide-range of stakeholders to discuss current ocean and coastal issues. Panel speakers included Members of Congress, as well as representatives of federal and state governments, industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations. A substantive focus was paid to key ocean issues during panels titled, "Education: Creating an Ocean Literate Society", and "Coral Reefs at Risk: Challenges and Solutions".

Capitol Hill Oceans Week Participants Dive in to Ocean Issues

WASHINGTON, DC - All eyes and ears will be focused on the ocean when Members of Congress and ocean experts examine a range of ocean exploration, education, and coral reef preservation issues during this year’s Capitol Hill Oceans Week (CHOW). CHOW events kick off on Tuesday, June 4 and continue with sessions leading up to World Oceans Day on June 8.
