National Marine Sanctuaries Calendars Available for Purchase
October 12, 2004Silver Spring, MD - The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is pleased to announce that it has partnered with MeadWestvaco’s Consumer and Office Products Group, to produce a line of calendar products featuring unique underwater photography of our National Marine Sanctuaries. Each calendar purchase will help create conservation-based education and outreach programs designed to preserve, protect and promote our nation’s ocean and Great Lakes treasures. Products range from $3.00 to $14.00, with a portion of each sale donated to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

Inouye of Hawaii will be awarded the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation’s 2004 Steward of the Sanctuary Award at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Education Center on Wednesday, August 18, 2004. Senator Inouye is being honored for his tremendous vision and leadership for the National Marine Sanctuary System and specifically for his dedication and support of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary Celebrates 10th Anniversary
July 12, 2004Port Angeles, WA - NOAA Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary(OCNMS) is marking the 10th anniversary of designation with a weekend of celebrations July 16-17. Events include a Friday evening public lecture by University of Washington researcher and professor Julia Parrish and the day-long Saturday CoastFest waterfront festival in Port Angeles, Washington. During Saturday’s activities, NOAA officials will be joined by Congressman Norm Dicks for the dedication of the new Olympic Coast Discovery Center at The Landings.
Tall Ships Return to the 4th Annual Thunder Bay Maritime Festival
June 22, 2004Alpena, MI - This year’s Fourth of July festivities will have a particular focus on northeast Michigan’s maritime heritage. The Thunder Bay Maritime Festival, a free family event, will take place on the nation’s birthday and feature tours of the three-masted 19th century Great Lakes schooner, Denis Sullivan. The festival will also feature the regional musical talents of the award-winning Song of the Lakes, as well as the popular acappella group The Overtones, Wisconsin folksinger and songsmith David HB Drake and renowned Great Lakes story-teller Genot Picor.
Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2004
June 10, 2004Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2004 brought together a wide-range of stakeholders to discuss current ocean and coastal issues. Panel speakers included Members of Congress, as well as representatives of federal and state governments, industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations. A substantive focus was paid to key ocean issues during panels titled, "Managing Our Marine Resources", and "Wonders of the Ocean World: Exploring, Monitoring, and Educating".
