PG&E Awards NMSF With Grant for the Monterey Bay NMS Exploration Center
December 14, 2009MONTEREY, CA – Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation today announced that the utility has given a grant to help create an interactive, state-of-the-art exhibit at a marine sanctuary facility to be built in Santa Cruz, Calif.
NMSF Issues Letter to White House Council on Environmental Quality Regarding Marine Spatial Planning
December 1, 2009The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation once again applauds President Obama and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force for such early attention on developing a national policy for the stewardship of ocean, coasts, and Great Lakes and now, for specifically addressing marine spatial planning. Recently, the Foundation issued a letter to the White House Council on Environmental Quality highlighting key characteristics and models of marine spatial planning for consideration in developing a framework, as called for in the Presidential Memorandum of June 12, 2009.

NMSF Announces 2009 Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund Recipients
November 10, 2009The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation announced the award of seven grants ranging from $5,000 to more than $23,000 from the Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund. These projects are dedicated to increasing public awareness of issues related to our ocean, including marine debris, human interaction with marine mammals, pollution, and the connection between the ocean and human health. In a very competitive process, the seven grants totaling $105,000 were selected from a total of 55 applications requesting $1.2 million.

September 19, 2009The site for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz was officially dedicated to the people of Santa Cruz in a ceremony today near the Municipal Wharf. A sign announcing the project was unveiled and local businessman Charles Canfield kicked off a major fundraising campaign by presenting a check to help build educational exhibits for the planned state-of-the-art marine science education facility.

Hawaiian Teen Raises Money to Fight Marine Debris
March 2, 2009Marine debris is a huge and growing problem affecting the ocean worldwide. It is a problem caused by people and will take every one of us to solve, but one Hawaiian teenager has shown that anyone can do their part to get involved. Thirteen year-old Gina McGuire has been recognized by NOAA’s Marine Debris Program for her efforts to raise awareness about the harmful effects of marine debris on Hawaii’s marine environment.
